Due to the increase in functionality of all sorts of portable and remote applications and the resulting need for (extra) power, more and more parties are using solar power. <br><br> Cell phones, PDA’s, MP3 players and other portable applications are produced for use by consumers everywhere and at all times. Furthermore, (traffic)lighting applications such as road studs and gardenlights are more and more fitted with a small solar cell and a battery. <br><br> The present generation of (mostly Li-ion) batteries however does not provide enough output to supply sufficient autonomy for these applications. The improvement of the Li-ion battery will not be able to keep up with the increased energy demand. There is a gap between those two trends that becomes bigger and bigger. The only way to keep on using Li-ion batteries is to reduce operating time. But applications such as Roadstuds require 99% uptime, and in the case of portable applications, users are asking for extended periods of usage. Bridging this gap and thus improving the autonomy of portable applications is the core of the solution TSA offers by using the STEP-UP Converter. <br><br> The above mentioned gap and the resulting search for alternative power sources such as solar cells and fuel cells has resulted in a strong demand for power supply electronics. With the STEP-UP Converter, TSA has positioned itself in a niche: Low-Voltage and (Ultra) Low Power DC-DC Converters. The patent has given TSA the possibility to obtain a unique and very strong position within that niche. <br><br><br>
